daughter with pre-diabetes?
6 Answers
Hi there,
my daughter is three and is on the 91st percetile for both her weight and height and the HV agrees that although heavy, as she is also very tall she is not obese (presumably she looked it up on some kind of kiddy BMI?)
Anyways, she has suddenly developed and excessive thirst, a poor apetite, a sleeping in the day thing, is always complaining that her tummy hurts and that she feels itchy (weird I know!) and she obviously goes to pee frequently now too especially at night which she never used to do before.
She has taken a urine sample into the docs to be tested for sugar and it was negative, but they did repeat it as they said there was something else showing on the first test, but not onthe second.
So, do I just leave her too it and tell her to stop moaning, or should I do something more proactive and adjust her lifestyle/diet etc, or should I take her to the doctor and see the doc instead of just he HV?
any thoughts, much appreciated.
love

hi zac, no I went into the health visitor describing all these symptoms and asking her what did she think (I actually just asked her as I was in the surgury for something else, baby daughter had a perferated ear drum due to an infection) and we got chatting and I happened to mention all her changes in behaviour and then she said "Oh, dear, it sounds a bit like diabetes, bring her back this afternoon with a sample and we will weigh and measure her also."
and that was that.
what do you think?

Good to see you back from the orient mimi... I'm sure you're calmly distraught, as any mother would be, rhowever, the attached link is a study I've been quite interested in since the occurrence of diabetes is prevalent in many North American Indian tribes, some of which I wiork with. The study (and others I'm familiar with) all lead in the direction of genetics being the key factor in the development of Type 2 diabetes. Although I'm not qualified to allay your fears, I would suggest that, as you already are, do the tests that are recommended, but don't be unduly worried. A prime question I would ask, in light of the studies is; what is the history of diabetes in the father and mother's ancestry? At any rate, enough of my ameteurish attempts to diagnose... depend on your Doctors and realize that either Type 1 or Type 2 can be controlled. Type 2, as I'm sure you know, can actually be cured, if that's the right word, with weight control and exercise. Here's a couple of links that I reffered to:
http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/pima/gen etic/genetic.htm
http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/medical/endoc rine/type1.html
I know it's easy for me to say, but don't let your heart be troubled...

hi mimififi my son was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 5 had all those symptoms there a stupid on call doctor did a urine test and told me he could be diabetic so when i get a chance get him into the surgery
worse thing he could have said i took my son as emergency to own gp who went mad and sent us to local childrens hospital
if you strongly think that there is some thing wrong take her to hospital, you know your child better than anyone..
do you know anyone with diabetes?
if so could you borrow a multi keto stick ? that shows if there are any keytones in her urine which is another way of testing and will also check blood sugars
is there any history of diabetes in the family?
has she lost rapid weight?
actually phone nhs direct and see what they say maybe there is somewhere in your area what can do another test as im not sure what pre diabetes means
good luck and let us know how you get on

Thank you to everyone who has replied (Hi CLanad, nice to hear from you....)
I have read the links that you posted and done some more internet searching (which i'm not sure is a good thing or not, was ignorance bliss pre-janet line I don't know?)
I think, I shall wait and see if these symptoms continue and if they worsen rapidly shall take her immediately to the docs. She has not had rapid weight loss, but I shall certainly monitor this carefully. I don't know if there are any diabetics in my blood line as my mother was fostered and we have no info on her family. However, the only issue we do have is that I suffer from very low blood sugar which I control with careful dietry planning.
Thank you Clanad for your 'words', my heart is much less troubled now I have been able to step back and hand things over as it were. I was having visions of trying to wake her in the morning to find her in a coma.... but, I have been rest assured. Maybe she is just recovering from a virus as there has been one going round the family for a few weeks now.
So, thanks again one and all. I am most grateful to you. I shall, no doubt, be posting again for rapid response recipes should things change for the worse!!!!!!!! Have a good eve peeps,
