Is there an optimum place to sit on the aeroplane to get best use of the air conditioning? Front, back or middle, we shall be sitting in 'Cattle class'.

Not really, however, the modified air, that is heated and cooled appropriately, actually enters the aircraft at the rear. The air conditioning unit (technically called an air cycle machine) is mounted in the aft most part of most transport category aircraft... for a number of reasons, not germain to this explanation. The air moves forward through floor level outlets for warm air and through the overhead (eye-ball) outlets for cool air. The pressure for both could be slightly higher near the primary source... It's a myth that fresh air enters the aircraft. The only air used for passenger comfort is produced by bleed air at the engines, which is then routed as described above. It's also used to pressurize the aircraft...

The reason I am asking, my son has a serious nut allergy, we did fly last summer and everything was OK, just wondered if there was an area to sit closer to the air conditioning scrubbers/filter.

Very few airlines have nuts(pardon the pun!) as an on board snack these days. Usually pretzels and the like! Would depend on the aircraft as to the optimum seating. Who are you flying with?
