my son broke his arm on monday evening and was kept in hospital the night, he was put under general anaesthetic for the operation to correct the break. This was the most traumatic thing i have ever done, i have seen this on casualty and always felt sorry for the parent having to watch that happen to their chhild, now its happened to me. has anyone else experienced this and how did you cope????

Id rather watch that see what happens if they try to operate under local.
When the same son was seventeen and training as landscaper, he had an accident at work that resulted in him needing fourteen stitches in the tip of his finger. He had to have that done under a local. He's a big, tough character, used to sports injuries and having head wounds stitched. But that day he was shaking all over (shock, I think), and I've never seen him in such a state except when he had flu.

hey laura, your right it is a horrid thing to see. my son went under last september and he went all white and his eyes rolled back and he wriggled about before dropping off to sleep, i felt all shakey and worried as he was my little man but the nurse was great and she calmed me down and i went out for a fag (for my sins!!) when i went back in he was all done and very drowsy but he was ok which took a weight off my mind and hopefully i will never have to see any thing like that again :-) x
Yes ~ my daughter had to go under when she broke her arm..she was 4 years old, and having an ASD didn't help ~ she went into hysterics and I had to hold her down while the doctor tried to put her out with the anaesthetic.
It was horrible..she was crying and I could hardly see for the tears streaming down my face.
It was just something I had to do, and obviously felt much better when she had woken up after the op. Another thing I hated was the fact that she wasn't allowed to eat before the operation. She went in during the evening, and the op was the next morning. My daughter woke up smelling toast and kept saying she was hungry.
I think that was almost as horrible..not being able to feed your hungry child :o(

Hi, I have never coped my sons having ops, my oldest now 17 yrs old, has had 5 ops, the last one being very major and he was in theatre for 4 hours, I hated seeing him be put "under" as he fell asleep, he was crying and one last tear rolled down his face as he went under and that totally broke my heart.
My other son was 6 weeks old when he had his op and again it was heartbreaking to see such a little person having to go under anesthetic.

I broke my arm when I was 7 and it was reset under general anaesthetic. From my childhood memories (I remember it well), I just got drowsy and fell asleep.
When I woke up back on the ward I was peeved as I could see all the other kids running around and I was too sleepy to join in. I think my Mum was more concerned about leaving me overnight than I was. All I could think about was looking forward to going on the rocking horse in the playroom.
Since then I have broken my arm again, which yet again was reset (twice) under general. It still felt like falling asleep and oh so tiring when I came round.

my little boy had to have some teeth out , they tried to find a vein in the back of his hand , but couldnt find one , so they had to give him gas. because he had had gas and not general he woke up extremely upset , plus we didnt get down to see him fast enough so he was screaming . it was the most awful experience and thankfully one we wont have to do again
