if a child is expressing themselves through the clothes they wear and the music they listen to then whats wrong with it? I wouldnt like my child to grow up and have a total change of attitude and personaility just because it was the latest craze. But if they were still the same person then i dont see how wearing different clothes would cause me any concern.
Mind you, my child is still under the age of 2 so maybe id change my mind at a later date lol

I would if my kids wanted to do, it is about them expressing themselves and forming an individual identity . I would much rather that they be confident in themselves and able to follow what they believe in rather than follow the 'rest of the crowd'. You may not like everything your kids do, as an example my son (19y.o.) has long hair and a goatee beard, not my taste but he likes it and that's all that matters.
Hi candygirl6
My Stepson went all goth for about four years.
My Husband was not happy about it at all but as my Stepson did not live with us we just had to ignore it as best we could.
N ext time we paid him a visit, he was shopping in Burtons (mens clothes shops) and still does. he is sixteen now, so they do outgrow it without parental influences.

I don't see what the problem is. It's not what someone looks like that matters, it's what they're like as aperson that counts.
Personally I think there are worse ways to dress than 'gothic'.
Just for the record, my daughter has a friend whose mum is a goth. She must be mid thirties and a nicer person you couldn't wish to meet. She has 2 teenage daughters who are lovely and she is a librarian.
Don't judge a book by it's cover, the world is full of people who do!

My daughter is a 17 year old goth..she has been dressing this way & listening to the music for the last 3 years.
I have people telling me ''I hope it is just a phase and she grows out of it'' or ''don't worry, it's just a phase''.
I don't hope she grows out of it, neither do I worry. I am so very proud of her no matter what she looks like or listens to on her iPod. She rocks!!

AS long as the person is goth because they want and not because their friends think it's cool, it would be ok. I'm just afraid of these goths when they decide to cut themselves or go more morbid like in the film "My First Mister" (I think that's the way it's called, one with Leelee Sobieski)
But honestly, I was a teen, I had my naughty moments, by typical tamtrums, whatever, and I never needed to label myself in any groups, I was just MYSELF. And still think it's the best way to be instead of hiding behind group identities! So I understand why candygirl says she wouldn't like her kids to be goth...
Anyway candygirl you might not like in the future if they do that, but don't say you wouldn't "let them", because as more as you try to stop them, more they will want to do it. And you can refuse to pay their black clothes and make up but you won't change their thoughts and tastes, so better to try and live in harmony don't you think? and accept the way they are as long as, like I already said, they don't go too mad over it !

let your child be it is only a phase he or she going through.
my son turned goth by the age of 14.
came back from work 1 night to found out his friend dyed his hair jet black. wanted the black long leather coat and was smoking dope behing my back.

Just observe and guide . plays the game with him if you see what i mean. try to get involved in his ways of fashion goth dressing he will accept your opinions and guidance
will trust you and get bored with it.
