Can a mum change a childs middle name without the father

a couple I know are separated but have a child. The child was named by them and the father is named on the birth certificate.
The mother has now told the father that she has changed the childs middle name. can she do this without consent from the father?

I think myself if the child is under one she can, not sure abtu if its over one.
how old is the child and does the father have parental responsibility, if the father has parental responsibility then he has to agree otherwise she can try and get a court ruling to change the name but has to prove it is in the best interest of the child
the child's registered middle name cannot be removed, any extra names can be added by baptism, The child can choose to use any of their christian names at any time they like in any combination. It is just a case of deciding what they want to be called.
