We spend over a third of our life in bed. Yet according to Mens Health magazine, the average adult (aged 18-70) only has three mattresses in their life time. This means we spend nearly a whole 6 years (24/7) on the same mattress.

It is argued that a poor over worn mattress contributes to 50-60 percent of bad backs which in turn costs the British economy 6 billion pounds per annum.

Also regarding an average mattress at the end of its cycle, an estimated 2 million bugs of various genetic structures live in a mattress along with 23 pints of semen, blood, salvia and sweat (on a continue waste cycle).

So how often do you change your mattress?

bought a new one a month ago had had the old one 4 three years always use washable mattress protecters though

our mattress is newish, but baby gaga's is very new. and cleaned regularly by me.

Mine is well and truly knackered! Its got a hole in it and I'm afraid I'll be impaled on a bed spring one night! I really should get down to dreams soon...

I'm not even going to tell you how old mine is, it's embarrassing. Though in my defence it does get turned regularly and we've even honked it outside occasionally and scrubbed it clean.

Both Mr Boo and I frequently get bad backs from sleeping on it, it's a wreak.

Every now and then we do look at new beds/mattresses but we never seem to get round to actually buying a new one.

Ours is 9 years old and is in a shocking state, especially my husbands side which looks like he's hit it from a great height and left a full imprint of his body; kind of like Roadrunner falling off a cliff .

Ours is about 2 years old now but the one that was replaced was so old and worn (we were never in a position to be able to afford a new one until then) that when we took it downstairs and outside to take to the tip, I managed to fold it over and carry it myself!! It maintained it's shape folded over all the way to the tip!

We certainly won't leave it so long next time!!

I'd say I've had 4 different beds in my life, but I do turn mattress over regularly.

mines just a year old, but i tell you what after reading that you have put me right off i wanna get a new one now, i do however clean it regularly, not just the sheets but the mattress too, bet it dont kill all the germs though yuk!!!

I had a water bed for years, no bugs as they don't live on rubber apparently and I washed it down regularly with anti bac stuff. The covers and all got washed all the time, so no probs really....

Alas, met mr B lol.... weight differentials meant that when we moved I had to forgo my lovely bed for a memory foam thing.... comfortable enough but you can't/not sposed to turn it... so I suppose there will be extras living with me in this one until I get my bed back up and running and kick him out to another bedroom lol..... xxx
