forgive me if this is the wrong catagory, I am researching my partners ancestry, I use ancestry.co.uk also genesunited but We have a problem he does not know where or when his farther was born, his mother passed away so we are unable to ask her, all he can remember and that is a bit vague is that he thinks he was about 11-12 yrs when his dad died and that was in Didcot Berkshire, we have got 2 different places for a marriage, any ideas as to where we go from here, it doesn't help that it is a common name WILLIAM BROWN.

Register Office: 197 Broadway Tel: 0845 129 5900
and it should give you William's age at death his occupation and address and the informant, probably your partners mum, later registrations included the deceased date and place of birth too .
when you have the certificate you could go to the birth registrations quite easily, then you will have his fathers name to confirm which is the right marriage, though you should be able to do that if you know your mum's maiden name, which is on your partners birth certificate.

Do you mean you matched the surnames in the same quarter with the same identical reference ? Then you can eliminate one as you know the two christian names, you can't easily get marriage certificates from local offices as they have different registers for different places of marriage and so it is a lot of searching for the registrars but you can send for both but ask that it is only supplied if the christian names match
