My 15 year old daughter, at the weekend, met an old friend from her primary school whom she hadn't seen since leaving there 5 years ago.

When I asked her what she was like now, my daughter told me she was "such an emo".

What on earth is she on about?

An Emo is a bit like a Goth but sort of milder.

It's todays version of a goth. Wear a lot of black, with flashes of bright colours, piercings, emotional, into poetry, my chemical romance or other bands with pretty boys wearing eyeliner and nice hair, liable to cut themselves and cry little black stars.

A 21st Century emo is different to the emo;s of the 20th century. Todays emo is as Goodsoulette desrcibes but a mid 80's emo was a sideliner to punk rock. A 1990's emo was more indie.
Today I think it is much more about a style of dress than any type of music etc

Being a teenager would do it, with a strong music influence. It's quite normal - surely you were a Goth at one stage... weren't we all? No? Just me? Damn.

You know the ones - sits in, listening to My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco and The Cure (yes, the Cure - still popular with our neo-goth friends...!), watching teen dramas, feeling the EMOtions in songs and art. Kicks in with the hormones.

Actually, all the above answers are spot on. I should know - I've bred one here, and it's impossible to define her really. Suffice it to say she's heading with a busload of emo mates to see 30 Seconds To Mars on friday.

Incidentally my daughter's not into dance music, but I guess she doesn't "get" emos as you put it, you're right.

The Emo kids are just another 'tribe'. Most teenagers will follow whatever fashion is dictated to them, Emo's tend to not quite want to run with the rest of the crowd so they are a bit more individual which I think is admirable. As I said before they all seem to come from nice families (although that may just be round here) and are usually lovely kids, I'd be more than happy if my son was 'emo'

I am just curious as to how my daughter and her friend, who were so close at primary school, have developed in separate ways.

Her friend has become an "emo", while my daughter is just "normal" - her term not mine I must add!

I wonder what an emo would term my daughter as! Any ideas?

emo is short for emotional, but the whole phrase is emotionally charged punk. I think you should tell her to stop being so steriotypical, she wouldnt be very happy if she knew that everyone she met went home judging her on appearence

That's a very fair point, FKNelectro, which I was asking the question as to what my daughter would be seen as - chav perhaps, I wonder. Any alternative suggestions?

Everyones descriptions are about right apart from whickerman (three of my favourite bands are in there! And I'm not 'emo' ) Just kidding, well I don't like to hear them called emo but I'm not being nasty =]

Don't worry, most of them dont. Most 'emos' just enjoy the music and fashion and get steriotyped as self harmers.

As for your daughter, well at my school she'd probably just be called normal. Anyone who likes anything remotely rock-ish in my school is automaticly a 'goth', anyone who wears a tracksuit is a 'ned' and everyone one else is normal.
