My daughter has been told today that she has to have a tonsillectomy in about 2 months time, waiting lists permitting. She starts a new job at the beginning of September managing a Playgroup and is being paid hourly. After the operation she has been told she will have to take 2 weeks off work. What, if anything can she claim in Sickness Benefit either from her employer or the government? Thanks.
Providing that she has done some work for her new employer and she is earning enough to pay national insurance her new employer should pay her Statutory Sick Pay at a rate of 79.15 per week after the first three days she has off. She may be entitled to more under her contract of employment. See the attached link for more info!
Is her new employer aware that she will need time off? Hopefully they will be sympathetic but there is a risk (small i hope) that they may dismiss her for such an absence so soon after starting.
