My Great- Grandmother's Birth
Perhaps someone can help me to find a record of my great-grandmother's birth. I have been trying to trace it for years but always hit a brick wall.
She was Fanny Jacobs (nee White) and, according to census records for 1871, 1881, & 1891, she was born in Dursley, Gloucestershire, in 1839. She married Henry Ditchett Jacobs on 18th October, 1864, at Bishops Hull, Taunton. Her father's name is given as William White on the marriage certificate. I have my great-grandfather's birth certificate (Henry Ditchett Jacobs) & would like to apply for Fanny's but I cannot find a record of her birth or census returns prior to 1871.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Also on the 1851, in the Dursley Union Workhouse is an Elizabeth White aged 48 born cambridgeshire and her son daniel aged 14 but i think he was born Dursley.
Anyway, i am going through all four districts for dursley on the 1851 to see if there is anything the transcribers missed, nowt else to do tonight!

I have seached the 10 districts of Dursley and Cam for 1841 and there is no Fanny White aged under 5 living there, I have found a fanny white aged 5 living in the St Mary Redcliffe district of Bristol, and of course there is no relation to head given, but the two adults living there are Arthur White aged 40 a ourneymand coachmaker and ann white aged 30, (remember adulkt ages over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 and so they are likley older. I've found her baptism on 18 sept 1836 at St Mary-de -lodes, Gloucester. daughter of arthur and anne, cannot find ARTHUR white on the 1851 census. This is the only Fanny I can find on the 1841 census and it does tie in with her age on the 1851.
Fanny was the name she used on every census from 1851 on, and her marriage, my ex's nan was Fanny hatton and that was her name on her birth certificate and was the name she always used, and this one i found was the baprised 9given) name fanny, I have tried every way of searching, including just looking for any female named fanny on the 1841 census for gloucestershire who was aged 5 or under on census night, still only coming up with that one. It is possible that her birth name was not white I suppose.
Good morning dothawkes31. It's amazing what you have been able to find out. I have tried to find the census entry for 1861 that you mention when you say that Fanny was working for the Tomlin family in Taunton. I can't get that up on the findmypast website. Perhaps you can tell me what route to take.
When Fanny married my great-grandfather at Bishops Hull, Taunton, in October of 1864, her residence is given as Nether Stowey. This is a village north of Taunton. We have been there a couple of times & it has one or two large houses so she may well have been in service there. No occupation is given for Fanny on her marriage certificate & her age, and that of Henry, is just given as 'of age' so presumably she was 21 or over. Her father, William White, is listed as a farmer so is unlikely to be the same William White that you found listed as an accountant.
My great-grandfather, Henry, was a miller. The family lived in Much Cowarne, Hereforshire, for a few years and it was there that my grandmother, Emily, was born. After leaving there, the family moved to Pitchcombe, a village just outside Stroud, and it was there that Fanny died on 17th January, 1900. Her age on her death certificate is given as 62 years. If the age on Fanny's death certificate is more or less correct, then she was indeed likely to have been born in 1838. Henry's occupation on his wife's death certificate is given as gardener.

Henry died on 3rd November, 1914, at Nupend, Eastington. His age is given as 74 years. I have his birth certificate & he was the son of John (also a miller) and Mary (nee Ditchett) Jacobs of Rough Moor, Bishops Hull, Taunton. His date of birth was 17th December, 1839, which ties in with the age on his death certificate.
How have you been able to access records for Dursley? I have managed to get most of my information from the findmypast website and the Morman website. The latter is not particularly accurate.
It ias strange that I have been able to find out so much about my maternal grandmother's parents and family but come unstuck with Fanny. Because she died before my grandmother, Emily, was married the latter did not talk so much about her mother. She (Emily) was working away from home at the time of her mother's death.
The pretty dress ring that I am wearing as I type this posting was fashioned from the gold from Fanny's wedding ring & it has the date of her death inscribed inside it.
Thank you so much for all the searching you have done on my behalf. Any more information gleaned will be greatly appreciated.
I was born and brought up in the Stroud area of Gloucestershire but now live well over 100 miles away in distant Lincolnshire so it is not easy for me to do on-the-spot research.
I tried desperately to post this earlier today but could not. I think the content was too long for a single posting & it was rejected. Now that I have split it into two, it seems to work.

Thank you, craft1948. The second quarter of 1949 seems a vague possibilty but only because Frome is in Somerset. The other locations are too far away from Dursley. Frome is still a good distance from Dursley. Maybe Fanny's birth wasn't registered. I thought registration was compulsory from 1937 but dot says not.
evening, i don't think that Fanny was born after the start of civil registration and her baptism is not included on the IGI, but St james Dursley records for that period are, which leads me to think her family attended the non conformist chapel in dursley. Anyone who did attend a non-conformist chapel at that time was usually farming or trades class, as they did not need the approval or support o the Anglican Church. I have found william white baptised 15 feb 1815 at the durslery methodisdt, son of thomas and charlotte white. Who were the witnesses that signed for her on her wedding lines? I have eliminated most Fanny Whites that i found on the 1841census for that area. There is a place called Cam and a place called Cambridge quite near to Dursley, and the transcribers, not thinking to check, have transcribed the place as Cambridgeshire, Goucestershire, which looks very confusing, so be aware of that as you search.
I will get you the pice number for the 1861 and 51 entries, once you have opened a page of the census, (the original) you just click right or left at the top and you can scroll through whole distrcts, i did this last night and it is very useful, it helps you become aware of the surnames that dominate a community and also what occupations are most common. All this helps later on when you are flumoxed! I did find a Louise Fanny White on the right area and right year but her father was wrong i think.

Thank you again for all your trouble, dothawkes31. I really appreciate all you have done on my behalf. The two witnesses at the Jacobs/White wedding were Robert Jacobs & Elizabeth Jane Ash.
I will get back tomorrow or the next day. I am tied up this evening & have a funeral to attend tomorrow morning.

I don't believe this I've found it all posted a long reply and lost it grrr
anyway i;ll start again
William White married Hester saniger 17 october 1838 at slimbridge, Dursley
their first daughter Mary was baptised at slimbridge May 1839
they had 3 more daughters in the 1840s
by 1851 the eldest daughter mary was a sevant aged 13 working closeby
in 1861, her parents had another daughter and a son edward and a 3 year old 'daughter' called fanny white.
in 1871, fanny white aged 13 is working as a dairy maid on a farm in worcester with her older 'sister' elizabeth,
in 1881william and hester are still in slimbridge but by 1891 william is dead and Hester becomes Esther, 2nd daughter Ann becomes Ellen, only son edward becomes William and Fanny is no where!!!
in my original reply, that took ages I included all the names dates farms etc, but i'm over tired now. anyway, The eldest daughter mary born 1839 is a believe your great grandma Fanny and they called her that after her baby sister ann arrived and but she was still mary in 1851 when she was working as a servant, but I am 99% sure this is correct now as i have not found any trace of a mary white as an adult or dying as a teenager.
They lived at tumpy green slimbridge and mary went to work at tumpy farm, but Fanny and her 'sister' Elizabeth went to work on a farm in Worcestershire in 1861.

sorry it was 1871 when Elizabeth and fanny were in worcestershire,
if you search for keturah White you will find the family in the 1861 in slimbridge. she was a later daughter.
Fanny White born 1858 registered Q2 Dursley 6a 179
Your Great Grandma: (I believe)
Mary white registered Dursley Q1 1839 x1 299.
William White and Hester sanigar's marriage registered Dursley Q4 1838 11 377
William White baprised at Slimbridge 14 Apr 1811 to william and nancy White
William's mum was probablt nancy Young. married his dad 1808 in slimbridge.
william's parents way have been John (who was 95 on the 1841 census BTW with son william 55 and grandson william 35) and Elizabeth white as he was baptised april 1783
However, before then, John White did not live in slimbridge, though on the 1841 census he states he was born gloucestershire, he was 95 though! Ages above 70 were nor rounded down on the 41.
All the marriages of a John White in the 1770s and 1780s in gloucstershire seem to have been to an elizabther lol
Where is Coaley? he's my favourite to be the John you need.
