Does anybody know of a UK web site where I could research an existing coat of arms?  (Not a company offering to design spurious family crests).

It's not a website  where you can do your own research, but you could contact the College of Arms. They will probably charge a fee.

As a start you need to find the heraldic words for the elements of the arms, for example, pale means the shield is in two halves (sometimes meaning a husband wife), the birds (I think) look like martlets and the lines do not appear to be chevrons as they are horizontal not diagonal

Thanks very much.  That will keep me out of mischief for a while!

hi  Stevie !

Is the saying on the coat - Industria didat? - yes I have been down to phrases and sayings.....

you know that there is a dictionary of sayngs for coats of arms? I found one at a local library when i was doing the book type of search that you are doing on the internet. The dictionary had an obvious title....Obviously I cannot guarantee that your local has a copy.

Good luck

Thanks, Peter Pedant. Yes, the motto is "Industria Didat". "Progress through Industry" seems to be a good translation.

I'll have to do all I can on the world-wide Interweb as my local libraries (in Belgium) are unlikely to have the book you mention.
