I am just after real life information from people who have had this done. We definitely do not want any more children and I am currently using the contraceptive implant but this has not worked well for me this time and I am almost always on a period which is driving me mad. Hubby is not keen on having the snip in fact he refuses which means its down to me. I have heard that it is more difficult for a woman though and have no idea of the recovery after. I would be grateful if anyone would share their experiences. What exactly does female sterilisation involve, ie the actual operation?

Since the laparascopic steri was introduced many moons ago it has been a lot safer for women but as a general anaesthetic is usually needed it still is higher risk than a 'snip' which can be done under local. Google Laparoscopic sterilisation , or the Marie Stopes webiste should have info also the family planning association
Hello tigwig, I was sterilised about 14 years ago when I was 29 as I didn't want anymore children. My husband had gone through a vasectomy reversal so I didn't think it fair to ask him to have the snip after the surgeon had done such a good job! I had a general anaesthetic. Two small incisions one just inside my belly button and one below (now hidden by hair - if you get my drift!). One incision was for the laproscope and one for the instrument to fix the clips. I was in pain when I came round, very bad cramps which is something to do with I think the gas needed to expand the abdomen and the following day bad pains in the shoulder. The tiny scars about 1" had disolvable stitches. Maybe take some pain killers an hour before the procedure if you are allowed to? After 24hrs though I was fine. My periods have not really changed, certainly not heavier, probably lighter actually over the years. Definitely do not regret having it. I am glad I do not have to think about contraception or being on the pill for years and years. Good luck if you have it done.
Many women experience heavier and more painful periods after this op, my wife certainly did.
i think its time he did his bit afterall youve born his children and put your body through alot. Why is he refusing?
Just ask him: Does he want any more kids? - with you or anyone else (not suggesting anything, just being pragmatic). He will know the answer deep-down.

If he does, use condoms.

If he doesn't want any more, tell him to have the snip. It's painless, takes away the worry from both of you and will stop the problems that you are having now.
Men are a bit scared of the bricks that they use
No snip, no rumpy pumpy.
They are scared of the op,they wouldnt admit it
They use bricks? Doesn't that hurt?
Yes hop,hot bricks i heard
When the doc was asked if it hurt doing it with bricks, he replied
'only if you get your thumbs in the way'
I had the snip 6 years ago, I was on the waiting list for 2 weeks and it was carried out at my local cottage hospital with just a local anesthetic and a pre-med. I was in and out of hospital in about 3 hours.

In really is the simplest op, no pain after the op, just a very little discomfort for a day or two and of course, sex is exactly the same, no difference in any way except you ain't going to get anyone pregnant!!

Why do some guys feel so threatened by this silly little operation, they feel it is going to make them less of a man? how about making them realise it actually makes them more of a man by facing up to their responsibilities and maybe saving their partner from a far bigger more dangerous operation!!!
Ratter well said you!
not sure how to answer it really , as i had it done nearly 8 years ago the recovery time was good but i went into deep depression afterwards ....i didn't want to do it but my ex wouldn't have the snip although he did not want any more children (not me) he had 3 from a previous relationship and then with me , his ex had 2 abortions because he didnt want them then she finally got sterilised , so you have to really decide if you really do not want children because once it is done and you realise that has been taken away from you it's the worst feeling in the world :( , on the other hand my friend had it done and says it was the best thing she ever done always tells me that (think she is trying to convince herself really) as in the last few months she keeps telling me that her and her b/f joke about having children but the way she tells me its like she is hiding something (her true feelings ) i think if she never got sterilised she would actually have one
Tigwig, have your hubby read Ratters comment.
No regrets had it done age 28
