I am a childminder and have my own 6mth old plus the two 1yr olds I care for so I desperately need these spaces to have the room to get all the children out safely. In fact when I can't get in one I am forced to take up 2 normal spaces as I have to have the room at both sides of the car when most people its one side only. The only thing about them not being near to the door for me is to make sure the trolley bay is close by instead as I have to get a trolley first before getting the children out of the car. I strongly believe these spaces should be monitored constantly and wish they would be. Even at Asda they have clamping/fine notices up but people still abuse them. GRRR!
Not sure why they put them so close to the supermarkets either.
Mollykins cazzz1975 has the perfect answer for you, its good for other car park users also as means we're less likely to (accidently) hit the side of other cars with our doors.
I'd never park in a disabled space and will only use the parent and child bays when I have our 21 month old with me. It annoys me also when blue badge holders use the parent bays because theirs are full...like thats an excuse, they wouldn't like it if I used theirs on the basis that I couldn't get in to a parent bay.

Nope...but I was once subjected to a torrent of abuse by some women (with 2 or 3 kids in tow - way to go setting an example) screaming at me for parking in one of the spots. She didnt have the deceny to apologise when my friend who was actually the driver and her toddler came back from putting the trolley away.
