Red Wine

I have just had a tidy up under the stairs where I keep my wine. Much to my surprise I have found Red Wind bottles dated 1996.
How long can you keep Red Wine before it has to be drunk?
Is this wine still drinkable??
Many thanks for your help.

It will depend on the quality of the wine (the great wines can take 20+ years before they should be drunk, and can still be excellent after 50+ years) and how it was stored (standing up in a room with temperature changes is not ideal).
Open it, test a little, and then be prepared to let it breath for 2-3 hours after decanting
