What Does It Mean To "cut" Beer With Lemon/lime Etc.?

Recently, I've come across the term used to describe beers, and flavoured ones often say they are "cut" with a fruit of some sort, but what exactly does this mean?

'Dilute' isn't the correct word. If you put some lemonade in beer you'd be cutting its strength, diluting it.
