Coffee Cup Lids

Not the most important question in the world but I'm curious...
When you buy coffee in a disposable cup and they put a lid on it, if you stay in the establishment you bought it from, why would you drink it through the hole in the lid? I thought lids were to stop the coffee slopping over if it was a takeaway drink and the hole was there to allow steam to escape so it didn't explode.
Isn't it dangerous to drink through the hole in case the lid comes off accidentally and the hot drink spills down your chin and chest?

I simply cannot drink from those cups with a lid on, have tried and feels all wrong.

It's just as dangerous to drink it with the lid OFF, in case you tilt it too far and the hot drink spills down your chin and chest . . .

Because, psychologically, it makes us feel less idle.

When you down in a coffee shop and relax, you feel as though you should be doing some work, not relaxing.

To get around that, you tell yourself that you're just grabbing a quick take away, just to revive yourself for more work, don't even have time to take the lid off, busy busy busy, sorry, just stopped for a quick caffeine fix, got to go, talk later, bye.

But why would anyone sitting down in a cafe or wherever want to suck their coffee through that little hole?

I wouldn't. If I am having my coffee "In", I jolly well want it in a cup. Only if I am having my coffee "out" do I want a lid on it so I dont slop scalding hot liquid over my hand whilst trying to juggle a case, a bag and a train ticket.

Buying coffee in a cup says ... I have time to sit and relax.

Buying coffee in a cardboard cup says ... I'm soooooo busy !!! ... I have no time to spare ... my coffee has to follow me, as I dash off on my hectic schedule.

And if you drink your coffee "in" but in a take away cup ...

You're trying to create the image that, at any moment, you might have to get up and go to an important meeting.

I know, I do it myself. I can convince myself I'm still in work mode, as long as I'm ready to dash off with my lidded cardboard cup. In reality, I still sit there, drinking it and reading the paper.

Even if staying in, such establishments usually require you to carry the coffee to a table, so the lid is for anti-spillage to protect the vendor from the blame-and-claim brigade.

So following that logic canary, those establishments that don't provide a lid on their cups and mugs could be said to be guilty of negligence in failing to protect their customers from the evil hot coffee??

I've always wondered, as I cannot seem to drink it properly from that slit in the lid, we do not have them here, so can never get used to them. And it is hard to remove the kid to sweeten the coffee and I can never ever get the lid back on again so making more dangerous!!

Drinking coffee or anything from a disposable cup with a lid strikes me as 'special needs' or 'dementia.'

It's the only sort of cup youcan get if you buy it to take out, corylus..... I can't drink through the hole, it takes in too much air. I hardly ever buy takeaway coffee anyway, I don't understand this passion for walking about with a tube of scalding coffee in your hand.

I always buy a takeaway coffee with a lid from the stall at York station, it's much better than the muck they sell on the train (unless you're in first class)
