Anyone know why Guiness put those little white balls in their cans of beer? We're stumped!

When the can is filled in the brewery, it is pressurised with nitrogen and the ball fills up with beer through a couple of tiny pinholes in the widget. When the can is opened the pressure is released and the beer in the widget squirts out through the holes to produce the creamy head - in the version you get in the pub, the beer is forced through a plate with tiny pinholes at the pump - this is in the plastic spout screwed on to the end of the spigot
