how can we differentiate methanol and ethanol?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Methanol is CH3OH, ethanol is C2H5OH, but I assume you mean if you have a flask of each, can you tell them apart. I would have thought this is nigh impossible as both smell of alcohol, both are flammable, and to be honest I can't think of a difference you could 'see'. Lab tests would be necessary (I think! It is about 30 years since I did Chemistry).
