Nice (but inexpensive) lunch in London...
25 Answers
Ooh, my first Q in years... :)
I'm taking my mum to London for her birthday next week and I'm just looking for suggestions for somewhere nice I can take her for lunch, but that isn't too pricey. We'll get into Euston, then heading to Oxford Street (Marble Arch station) for a browse and then to Ealing Broadway station later on for her hair appointment. So, any ideas between any of those will be muchly appreciated. Thank you! :D

If you are going down Oxford Street from Marble Arch just past Selfridges there is a left hand turn called James Street, it is nearly all little restaurants, worth a look abd if you don't fancy anything Bond Street station is just opposite so you can move on. We have used a couple of the italian down there which were good.
If you like Thai:

A number of restaurants within central London... see the 'locations' page on the website. Relaxed, friendly atmosphere, authentic Thai food, not expensive... the squid is excellent...

If you're walking along Oxford Street, turn right onto Dean Street into Soho. Turn first left, taking you into Soho Square where you turn right into Frith Street. There you'll find a branch of Bistro 1. Two courses for £6.90 (+12.5% service charge = £7.76) or three courses for £7.90 (+12.5% service charge = £8.89). Menu here:

If you don't fancy walking all of the way down Oxford Street it's a 5 minute hop (3 stops) on the Central Line from Marble Arch to Tottenham Court Road. There's also another branch of Bistro 1 in Soho (on Beak Street) and one in Covent Garden (Southampton Street, which is the one I usually use). Home page here:

Just off Baker Street and nearly 1/2 way down in Devonshire Street, Odins, where Peter Langan started his empire from.
They do set lunches and a lovely environment - maybe a little pricey though but a nice treat.

What sort of food do you fancy petal? There's a nice street called Charlotte street round the corner from me off tottenham court road near goodge steet tube which has a whole whoast of places to eat and I can recommend a couple of the curry places, the thai metro and it also has a zizi's and a pizza expressed if you feel so inclined. There's a grouchos near by too which I'm led to believe is good (although bloody expensive from what I recall of reading the menu). I can also second snag's recommendation, it's divine in there.
Don't forget to knock for me as well... I appreciate a good feed... Ta ;oP

well for me, I think that the Poons immediately off Leicester Sq on Leicester St is some of the nearest that you can get to real Cantonese food (I lived in HK and trabelled extemsively in China, as well as living in the country too). Its right opposite the NCP park - just be careful as there is also a Poons in Gt Newport St (to be avoided) and the original (expensive) in Covent Garden. Its about £15 a head for a real pig out.
Thanks, CD, lovely! I'm going to look into all these places. Too many to choose from now, though. I might give you a tinkle when I'm near by; Ma will be in there getting her barnet done for a good couple of hours. :) x
Thanks, DT! Do you have any links for ***? The only thing I can really find is something someone's posted about it closing down in Oct. :(
