If the food industry came up with a new additive as toxic as nutmeg, would they get it approved?

Have you any idea how much you need to ingest for it to be toxic?
Even pure water will kill you if you have enough of it.

3-4 whole nutmegs. Water isn't actually toxic though, the effects of too much may well kill you but not through toxicity, too many apple pips on the other hand will kill you (can't remember how many though)

The source I found gives the lethal dose as 1-3 nutmegs.

I don't know about nutmeg but I read somewhere once that if someone invented an apple now the EU would not allow it to be sold because of the cyanide in it.
