When I was a youngster (many years ago) we used to call fish & chips, fish & nerks, and we used to go to the nerkery for them.
Was this just a local slang term, or did other people use the name nerks for chips?
Sorry, Craft, it's definitely 'luv' in Sheffield. A lot of male visitors to Sheffield are surprised when they hear male bus drivers, and many others, addressing them as 'luv' ;-)
Thanks, mamyalynne, for the link. I lived about 12 miles from Leeds at the time, but I had relations who actually lived in Leeds, so that is where I must have got it from.
There was a thread on here a few weeks back which I can't be arsed to dig out, but it concerned the free scraps of batter put on chips and the various regional names for them. I thought it was quite interesting.
My late mother was born in Leeds (1908) and lived there until about 1936. She then moved to Bradford, where I was born. She called fish and chips "fish and fernerks", but I never bothered to ask her for an explanation.
