Why do certain brands of orange juice, lemonade etc have a "suitable for vegetarians" label on? Do we have to assume that any brand WITHOUT this label contains meat?

mmm meaty orange. My favourite.

Picked up a pack of 'Brazil Nuts' from Tescos a while back, which had helpful allergy information on the back. "Contains nuts". No Sh**, Sherlock.

they could be using blood oranges

ahaAAAAAAAa!

Yes! Of course, although i've just noticed the same "Vegetarian" sticker on my Salt and Vineger Potato Crisps

i remember being surprised when my vegetarian friend told me that the only walker's crisp flavour he couldn't eat was the cheese and onion flavour, apparently it contains animal rennet. ker-azy.
They're just covering their backs I guess.  That's certainly what it is with the nuts thing.  But there are indeed a fair few brands of crisps that aren't veggie.

LOL, Excellent

I have a relative with a nut allergy, and apparently the only quality street he CAN eat is the purple nut one, its the only one guaranteed free of nuts! mad

Since I only got one star, I'll spell it out.

Animal products are used for lots of things. Gelatin, which comes from animals, is used regularly as a liquid thickener, and could easily end up in orange juice to bulk it out. Saying 'suitable for vegetarians' lets vegetarians know that this hasn't happened for that juice.

Do I get 3 stars now?

Also, some colourings are of animal origin, which might be why the squash isn't veggie friendly.

My sister tells me that sherry isn't vegetarian because they seal the barrels with pork fat. It's not kosher or halal either for the same reason!

ugh.

think that's the last time I drink sherry!

Mind you, pigs have personalities.

Question Author

yes, well, i grant you that

if they were sealing the barrels with pigs personalities it wouldnt be a problem

but, ew !

That's a lot of barrels. Personality goes a long way.
I heard a rumour about six or seven years ago that the charcoal remains of cattle burned during the bse crisis were being used to filter water in Sheffield, rendering  the drinking water unsuitable for vegetarians. Can anyone confirm / pooh-pooh this?
