Spelling on Menus

I know I can be a bit of a food fascist and have unreasonably high expectations on occasion.

But.....am I the only person who takes the view when reading a menu, that if they can't spell it they can't cook it?

I am sick to death of being offered Ceasar salad, place instead of plaice, etc. I wouldn't mind if I was heading off to the local Harvester but some of these mistakes are occurring in Michelin starred restaurants.

Lol, can you not refuse to pay saying that you asked for a caesar salad with plaice and then was sold the inferior Ceasar salad and place which is not what you asked for? if they kick up a stink threaten to report them to trading standards for false advertising! :)

There is plenty of cringeworthy apostrophe misuse too, not just in food places but I see it a lot in food places around here. I might take a marker pen out one day ;)

i don't know that it follows to be honest, but if they can cook then i don't really care if they can't spell.
there again, i'm one of those who couldn't care less about spelling and punctuation on a forum, whereas it drives some people nuts.

That's bad, I must say I go a lot on how people spell though I do realise we can all make mistakes, I don't think a business can afford to make those sort of mistakes. However, I just wonder with the way some people are nowadays with literacy, whether they'd notice anyway <wry smile>.

I don't think you can make the jump from not spelling to not cooking properly but it does indicate an establishment that has poor attention to detail which is not good.

One of the items in my old local Indian said in the description "chicken cooked with spleen"

We figured out that it was some sort of spell check mistake as the beef version of the same dish was described as "beef cooked with spices"

Boxtops that reminds me of a meal in China where I had to further translate the Cantonese to English menu. What on earth is Grass turtle??? Oh bugger, I used to have a tortoise. Deer's 'panis' was of greater concern....

I guess it all depends, if you copy and paste your menu's then check for typos
