I would like to buy a nice bottle of Gin for a friend as a thank you for something. I can't stand the stuff, but it is her favourite. I know that she likes Bombay Sapphire and Caorunn, but i'd like to get her something a bit special that she can't just pick up in the supermarket. Anyone any suggestions?

I thought maybe this:

If they know their gin then they’ll know the difference, the same as wine buffs do, but it’s all about what you prefer. Bombay Sapphire is perfectly acceptable as a gesture and they’ll know you’ve spent a few quid extra.

Tanqueray 10 is more expensive than standard Tanqueray but not as nice as the standard Tanqueray IMO. For me, Martin Millers is as good as it gets, and the Westbourne strength is beautiful drink on it’s own if you want to push the boat out.
No stay clear of the Ten, annie - it tastes like lemon sherbert on a high.....

okay DT - it's a nice bottle though ;O)
Plymouth gin, claims to be the only people with appelation controle like the french wines, do not use chemicals but all fresh herbs and spices. Basic is 41% and navy strength is 57%. I have always hated gin but when we toured the distillery I actually drank this neat and found it quite pleasant. Unlike London gin, no other distillery can make Plymouth gin.
Interesting that I am currently involved in this thread and one headed "Am I drinking enough . . . "
I'll join you for one vallaw - g and t here and a good malt over on the other thread
Does anyone know what the difference is between a dry gin and normal? What do they add or take away to make it dry? (Sorry annie0000)
Most of these prices are ridiculous, only an idiot or a snob would pay nearly £50 for a bottle of gin. 'Mothers ruin' is simply a basic, crude distillation on a par with vodka, and cannot be compared to something as noble as whiskey.
Yep, that's the one Annie! Although, as I say, gin can be as different as wine or other spirits to the knowledgable (or pretentious!) It really is a question of taste. I'll always have a bombay in a G&T if I'm out and about and it's a failsafe.

khandro - I don't know a lot about Whiskey, prefer Whisky myself. :o)
You're welcome, annie0000.
I cannot give it a review , though. We were given a bottle of it last week and (miraculously) haven't opened it yet. It just looked interesting to me. :-))

ladyalex - just noticed that one is brewed in the Bruichladdich distillery - I like their whisky so maybe that's a sign!
Sispsmith is good, but difficult to find although I've seen a couple of Waitrose stocking it.

Beware of Hendricks and Millers as they are very cucumber-y and not to everyones taste.
You should drink Hendricks with a slice of cucumber, instead of lime.
