Am I a total wino and out of control lol?! I used to drink on a Fri, Sat & Sun which over the years as increased to Thurs too and sometimes Wed. Now its become such a habit I find myself wanting to drink nearly every night of the week! As soon as the kids are in bed its such a relief to wind down and have a glass of wine. Through the week its around 2-3 medium glasses and on a weekend most of a bottle. OH drinks 5-6 cans of lager (not strong). So do you lot drink a lot less or more and does it sound like I have a problem or am I just normal?!

to me, it seems like too much, especially if you require it to wind down.
But then i drink very very rarely

I had gotten into the habit of having a small whisky at bedtime to help me sleep, I have stopped now as I realised it was ONLY a habit and wasn't actually helping in any way, in fact, as alcohol makes me wee more I was having to get up more often in the night to go to the toilet.
You probably want to calculate that little lot in "units" each day to know for sure. Moderate drinking seems to be good for you, but relying on it to get you though is a bad sign.

I agree with daffy, its a habit, you can probably relax without it, you probably just dont think you can.

it sounds a lot when you add it up

To me that seems like quite a lot. I buy a bottle of wine on a Friday night and that'll probably last me the whole weekend, (unless I'm going out to friends or have friends coming over for dinner), or if I'm really pushing the boat out then I'll have two bottles of wine over the weekend. I don't really like drinking in the week as I'm a light weight these days anyway.
It sounds too much for me - one glass a night is one thing, but it does depend on the size of your glasses! I think your key words are "I find myself wanting to drink" - that's not good.
The trouble with alcohol is that you gradually need more and more for the same effect.
The fact that you asked a question here about your drinking suggests that you may be worried about it.
I see having a drink as a bit of a treat. If I did it every night it would no longer be a treat to look forward to. I think you may be drinking more than you should but who am I to judge anyone?
Although I have been drinking more than normal recently which has been at least once a weekend, I rarely drink. At a push once a month.

I have my reasons for not really liking it when people drink alot and I know most of my family do as you do but I've never really understood the need to drink in the evening for no reason. I never have any alcohol in unless I know people will be round. A cup of tea works for me to relax in the evening.

There are some people I know who will watch the clock and as soon as it hits 5pm there cracking open the wine. Every night. I find it a little worrying.

Thats me I guess. As soon as kids are in bed at 8, out comes the booze! We are like naughty teenagers. In fact its not a spur of the moment decision to do it cos I purposely delay tea until later as I dont like drinking after eating.
I don't actually see anything wrong with wanting a drink to help you relax. Life is stressful; alcohol is one way of dealing with it.

As to how much, ah, that's a different matter. For me one to two glasses of wine with dinner is normal; so's a nice cold G&T or two on a summer's day, or a Bailey's nightcap on a winter one.

The real question, I think, is whether you can go without if you want. I can, so I've got no worries about it. If you can, you're not a wino and you're not out of control.
My husband and I used to drink every night for years. Sadly, the amount grew and grew as the body needs more and more. I gave up totally over 3 years ago but as others know on here, my husband died in February because he couldn't give it up until it was too late.

Just be careful.
I may be a little more over sensative than others on the subject but if you are planning every evening around when you can fit a drink in, I think it's something that needs to be addressed, before it becomes a real issue.

chrissa, the body 'needs' more and more if you're alcoholic; my 'needs' haven't changed in 50 years. I drink because I like it, not because my body needs it. Clearly, alcoholics do have special needs, like diabetics; but for others it's not a medical problem. It may be a social one, though, or even a psychological one if you plan your evenings around drink even though your body isn't demanding ti.
