I make tuna sandwiches (when tuna is on offer) with chopped cucumber and salad cream but I am pretty sure that my gran and mam just did them with salt, pepper and vinegar. Does this sound right? Thanks

Exactly that - a hot sandwich made out of toast. No need to butter the outside of the sandwich or anything, and because it's flat it's really easy to clean. we always have cheese in ours though, so don't know if you would need to use butter on the inside of a non-cheese based sandwich (trial and error I suppose).
On Ebay these look similar

Get deafened by the frantic miaowing of the cat which has suddenly appeared from nowhere.
Feel sorry for cat (who hasn't been fed for at least 5 minutes)
Empty tuna into cat bowl.
Reach for a jar of peanut butter instead.

There was no butter in our Portuguese tuna, onion and tomato toasties but the olive oil on the outside (not a lot) made it lovely and moist to eat.
