Having decided to try goose this year I ordered it from a local butcher today. I had no idea of the price though - £70 for a 12lb bird - you could have knocked me down with a feather, is this normal?
They are not mass produced so you do pay a premium for the low intensity rearing ( a good thing INMHO). I have to admit that last year I was a little flustered at how much they were costing (I was buying 8.....only one got used!!!)
we had goose last year for the first time...never again! i found it to be over-hyped, over-priced and absolutely not worth the time, money or effort. the best thing about it was the goose fat we collected for the roasties on new years eve!
back to a free-range turkey this year, although if it was just up to me, i'd buy a frozen ready-basted one from the supermarket as i don't think there's any difference in the taste and they're always succulent.
Thanks pasta, you've got to laugh (hopefully) I've just read your post to my OH and his attempt at humour was ' but won't that come with big hooped earrings!'
