That was a bit unkind VHG, the kid is trying, way to go dumping on their motivation.
There are things you cna do like asking in shops, hotels etc, get a CV put together etc and drop it off anywhere they get through casual staff, but you could also work for yourself doing somehting like valeting, errands etc.
Design yourself a card explaining who you are and what you do and place it in shop windows etc.

Being literate and numerate will help... so keep things like text speak for texting it will help you present yourself as brighter and more employable.
Try small shops, and businesses as they are less likely to have strict policies on who can and can't be employed. One of our local hairdressers has a lad as a shampoo'girl' he's very popular with the older customers as he is very polite and has slightly larger hands so gives a good massage when shampooing he gets better tips that way.

Anywhere with a kitchen needs pot washers, check out restaurants and hotels. Although be prepared cos Chefs can be... Uh... Colourful creatures.

Think outside the box... we have friends that live in town (here in the U.S.) and when the 14 year old was pocdering this same question, he came up with the idea of canvassing the neighborhood (perhaps a 3 block square) to see if the homeowners were interested in having their windows washed. After find a vague but interesting response, he checked with the city to see if a permit was required (it wasn't), checked various laws to see if a "child" age 14 could do the work and under what restrictions (he could, but couldn't use a lsdder more then 10 feet tall) and asked his Dad to make up some business cards. He advertised one Wednesday and by that Saturday had 7 jobs for which he was paid $5.00 each. His total cost outlay was probably $10.
He's very careful to do a good job and now he's up to nearly 20 jobs for the weekend. As summer approaches, he's enlisted 2 other kids (ones a girl) from his class and they intend to expand the business...

Just a few weeks ago a wee boy of 14 went all around putting letters through doors offering a Sunday service of delivering papers and rolls !! I was so impressed I cancelled my Sunday delivery from usual newsagent to give him some encouragement ....and he has not let me down yet..unlike the other lot...so jolly good for you ...good luck !

Competition is a reality of life, ummmm... The Top Dog wins out though. This kid does the job better and cheaper than the others, however that was only an example of 'thinking outside the box'. It's always better to work for ones self rather than others if at all possible.

You know those pesky leaves and trash that accumulate over the winter behind the bushes and in between the flower beds? I'd pay someone pretty well if they'd do a good job of cleaning those out. My raised beds in the vegetable garden are too narrow to rototill (forgot what ya'll call it) so have use a potato tine to turn the soil over and break up the clods... every spring! An adventurous young guy would see this as an opportunity.
My first paying job was exercising horses for a Dude Ranch nearby...things like that are usually out of the question... but lots of people have dogs, no?
