In Brighton,East Sussex, the Fire Brigade fit and service smoke alarms free of charge.
If you do not have one where you live, you might like to request one from your local Fire Brigade.
The one I have in my house does not go off when there is a slight whiff of smoke from the toaster or the frying pan.

Really? I thought that you were going to say the exact opposite and say that it did go off at the drop of a hat. Can you kindly tell us the make and model of it, or is is the one that the Fire Brigade puts up for free?

Mine goes off without any smoke. Shrieks if I open the kitchen door and hot air hits it in the unheated passage.
