Eating red meat can greatly increase chances of heart disease or cancer at an early age. I hoping Im going to be ok then as I havnt eaten red meat for about 30 years ! My OH and son do occassionally. I know that if we listened to everything they say, we would hardly eat anything at all, but I just dont like the taste
Do any Abers eat lots of red meat and cannot do without it.
Hopefully we wont start another animal welfare debate like yesterdays !

I can't remember being taught that veg were good for me - I just naturally thought that you had lots of veg with meals.
We never ate chippy type meals or processed food. We didn't have takeaways and fast foods. People were healthier during and after the war years. It is going to take a lot of convincing for some people to stop eating junk food.
Red meat in itself surely is only a problem if you eat loads of it and it forms a main part of your diet.

I don't think our ancestors died of the same diseases we do. They had injuries while out getting all that meat,or they died of infections....not so many viruses or cardiovascular problems. Nor were they overweight,as they moved a fair amount, and didn't eat the rubbish carbs and processed, sugary stuff people consume now.
Even fat is not the baddie we've been led to believe,as it is more necessary to body functions than carbs. It's also never been proven that dietary cholesterol affects blood cholesterol.

:-).......

Interesting point pasta.
There was a study some years ago surrounding a group of Cambridge students who lived for 4 months in Iceland with the Eskimos and lived on seal fat.....bloody awful to swallow, but that was the only food often available.
The monitored their total blood cholesterol regularly and despite their high animal fat diet, their total cholesterol fell markedly.

I'm of a different generation to you ummmm. Coke and Fizzy drinks were rare unless you went to birthday parties. Kids just drank milk or water. Even squash was a birthday party treat. Likewise crisps, etc. They didn't feature on a normal shop - they were treats at the pictures.
And we did eat fatty meat back then too. The cheaper cuts with more flavour. Most families didn't own a car so we walked or biked everywhere.
Gosh, I am old!!!!

That's interesting sqad. I love fat meat but refrain from eating it because of my high cholesterol count. In fact I only eat meat with low fat content like chicken. I am fortunate in that I have a friend who supplies me with pheasant during the shooting season. I eat some of it and put the rest in the freezer. I have not bought any meat for some time. The price of meat is rather high and might prevent some people from buying it.
This may be of interest to some-I read it the other day,but for some reason cannot access it now. The author suggests that the body is meant to use fat as its primary fuel...the fact that we now eat so many carbs may be going against Nature. It's quite interesting-even if a lot of the science goes over my head.

It would be interesting to learn of any meaningful research data emanating from Argentina.
The Argentinians are renowned (or should that be notorious) for their devotion to eating red meat, with an emphasis on gigantic steaks.
Surely there must be some sot of statistical data on bowel cancer deaths on a per capita basis vis a vis other countries such the USA and the UK.
