I find it amazing the amount of money some people spend in there a week.

I refuse to pay more for a cup of coffee than for a pint of beer.
Starbucks and the rest have a base cost of around 20p for a coffee the rest is profit.

I don't go to those places, unless i'm on the hoof and need a cup of tea, so i go to the nearest place. i must say the tea always seems reasonable.
But i know there are certain people who religiously go to one brand and wouldn't think of going to another shop, coffee snobs i believe they are called?
but judging the success of these businesses over the past years i would say that the pricing structure is right, otherwise they wouldn't make the money they do.

It isn't just the coffee you're paying for. You're paying for someone to make the coffee, for the machine that makes the coffee and the electricity it uses, the cup the coffee is served in, the table you sit at and the chair you sit on, the shop cleaner's wages, the window cleaner's wages, plus the business rates, rent, insurance, and all the other expenses the shop owner has to pay.
Yes, trendy coffee shops are way too expensive for what they are. Quite often you can get just as good coffee in old-fashioned tea/coffee shops at a much lower price. The thing about Starbucks and Costa is that they are on high streets and not side streets, so if you are in an unfamiliar town then you will find them easily if you need to stop for a break. Presumably they can afford the higher rates for prime locations.
Not a big fan of Starbucks coffee. I've rarely had a satisfactory cup when forced in.
I do agree that often in these places you're paying for the seat you sit in for as long as you like.
I also used to think the newspapers in NERO were free and regularly took a copy of the times or the guardian. I was only later told that grabbing a paper from the rack on the way out was considered theft!
