You probably should use one heaping teaspoon of coffee for each cup you want to make, plus add one extra. So four cups is five teaspoons; eight cups, put in nine teaspoons.

Jules - give me 24 hours and I'll get back to you on this one. I've spent 6 months abroad studying on Erasmus programme this year and ALL the Italian and Latin American students brought their stove top coffee makers with them! They come in different sizes. As you say - it is indeed a complicated process of water and powder stuff and then on the stove. But the smell from it is WONDERFUL and although I hate the taste of coffee, the people from the coffee expert countries of the world won't drink theirs any other way!
I'll ask my Italian friend asap and get back to you on tips/justifications! :-)
