Gardens. Hard water ? Soft water ?

I would like to know if gardens and lawns prefer watering in dry times with hard tap water or can softened water from a water softener be used without problems. Thanks..

Soft or softened water can be used at any time to water any garden.  After all, rainwater is soft.

Hard water can be used to water everything except the lime-hating plants such as ericas (heathers), camellias, rhododendrons and the like.

If your water supply is sourced locally, then the soil type in your garden should match the water type in your pipes and there should be no problem using it straight from the tap (unless a hose-pipe ban is in force).

What Wolfgang means is that the water softener will regenerate far more often and use up salt. That is more expensive.  There is no point in using softened water on plants, apart from lime hating ones.
