french onion soup

Hi.I went on the internet for french onion soup and there are many recipes to choose from which is good but one ingredient puzzles me,"Beef Broth". Does this mean cans of beef soup or is it another name for beef stock such as oxo cubes etc. All help is most welcome

They might, say, make a pot au feu for Sunday then use the 'bouillon' left to make onion soup for the week. This 'bouillon' will be what has been translated to 'beef broth'. A beef cube such as knorr (Oxo is too salty and bitter in my opinion) can also be used. The secret to a good French Onion soup is the cooking of the onions, they have to caramelize so they are sweeter.
