Contains Barley

Just noticed that cans of Guinness draught bear the boldly printed word "Contains Barley" . This might be an advertisement of its quality; that it's not made with cheap grain; but looks like a health warning. If that, for whom is it intended? Are there many people who are barley-allergic? And how did they fare when nearly all beers and lagers were made with it?

I imagine it's for those who are gluten intolerant or have celiac disease. It may also be a required warning.

They did without or got poorly trying, maybe without realising why.

Whether there were fewer with allergies then - difficult to know. Certainly there would have been less awareness

They (the bottles and cans) ought to bear the warning:

"Gness drinks this."

That should suffice.
