I have the unenviable task of making a cake for a rather special anniversary. The main problem is that I should have started on this weeks ago - NOT a week before the event.

I need a crash course in making sugar paste roses because red roses have been requested as the decoration. (The cake is no problem - I can have that made tomorrow and the marzipan etc by the end of the week).

I can't follow the vids on you tube - I need a permanent reference (i can't be doing with rewinding). Can anyone recommend a really good book or website. Or can anyone tell me in words of one syllable how to do it? I'm going to see if I can just buy them from the sugarcraft shop, but failing that, I will buy the pre-coloured icing. What other stuff do I need?

"Mr BM, have you ever plastered a wall?"
"Yes"
"Were you any good?"
"I did OK"
"Good, put this icing on this ******* cake.........."
BM I made and decorated my daughters wedding cake, i decorated it with miniature silk roses and it looked lovely. X

well that was my first attempt at sugarpaste roses, Sparkles. I had never made one before last Sunday!!! I know it looks amateurish, but I am no professional at this.

Nonetheless, the recipients of said cake (my grandparents who celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary) were extremely pleased. (Nanna nearly cried - I am not sure whether that was because it was a bit TOO pink though, lol)
I could have improved the cakeboard for you! Next time.....well done though on the cake! Once we have the website up, will let you know - and no, its not advertising, as I am only a consultant to Cornish Cakeboards.
Looks very nice indeed, when can I expect my slice?
That looks wonderful.
Your roses are spectacular ad I love the colours.
Well done you!

I didn't have time DT. It was all lastminute dot com (as it normally is in my family) - eg 5 years ago, they decided they wanted a big party 12 days before the event so we had 12 days to organise a marquee, tables, toilets, flowers, catering etc............

I COULD have bought a cake, but that wouldn't have meant the same to Nanna who taught me how to bake. As it is, she is happy as anything as was utterly made up.
You have done a great job though and, as you indicated, she obviously appreciated it.

Giveup, with the huge number of people who are expected on Wednesday (which is "The Day") there won't be any left.

Thank you ladyalex, and all you others who have complimented it. If You'd have seen me last Sunday, covered in food colouring and swearing like nothing you've heard before, you'd all have laughed at me.
You first time is remarkably well done. There are so many ambitious ladies on AB.
I've heard all the sweary-words, barmaid. In all combinations.

Glad your day went well and most of all that Granny liked the cake.
:-))
you'll be practically a professional by the time you've done one for me..
Question Author
I think I can safely say, my cake making days are over. Until the 70th anniversary of course (and thereafter, grandad is insistent he will make 100)!!!
