drinking water

my dog always has clean fresh water available,so why would he rather drink out of the dirtiest scummiest puddle he can find in the garden...perhaps he prefers the taste!

Our cat was just the same. She always had a fresh bowl of water, but she preferred to drink out of the toilet bowl, the fish pond, or the bird baths - but never out of her bowl of water!

Could this be cause the non~domestic water has not got a chlorinated taste(and as the WC water has been standing,it too may be less chlorinated?) Lots of Pets do this,they obviously know something that we don't!

I think mystress is right. Animals are more sensitive to the smell and taste of chemicals in our tap water. My dog prefers to drink running water, which I guess is a sound primitive instinct, it being safer to drink from moving water (oxygenated ) to still water(possibly stagnant)

i swear my dogs prefer evian, but can't get the lids off the bottles. they give me a slightly haughty look when i turn on the tap...

Clanad, as the only method a dog has of cleaning its' genitals is by licking them , I for one have never allowed my dog to lick anyone's face and I cringe when I see other dog-owners letting their dogs lick them, or more  dangerously, their small children or babies . I must add that my dog gets bathed on a fortnightly basis, sometimes more frequently and I give him regular worm and flea treatment as I'm pretty sure most responsible dog-owners do nowadays. We don't all anthropomorphise our pets.
