If it wasn't , it'll have smelled so bad, you'd never eat it. Use by dates are put on by supermarkets and manufacturers to con naive people into throwing stuff away and buying more. As has been said already, they're the devil's work (The devil being Messrs Tesco, etc.)

There was a polio or similar warning on corned beef
so they took it off the shelves and we made a compound for it ,five years later they said it was fine and it was put back on the shelves
The managers used to take the moldy cheese out and then cut the baad bit off and re-wrap it
I never bother about the dates after that
