Marie Lloyd was born Matilda Alice Victoria Wood in the East End of London in 1870. She became a star at fifteen and stayed top of the bill, playing in 150 music halls throughout the world, until she died at the early age of 52.
Her songs, invariably rich in double meanings, were considered scandalous at the time and often condemned as immoral.
She and VESTA TILLEY were known as the two queens of the Victorian Music Hall, the superstars of their time, earning the equivalent of 1,000 a week at the height of their fame.
Despite her lifelong success she gave much of her money away to good causes and she was far from wealthy when she died in 1922.
