Tuna Sarnie

I've been reminded by another thread about something that may have been peculiar to my family.

As a child I remember tinned tuna being mixed with malt vinegar. I'm pretty sure pink and red salmon got the same treatment for our Sunday tea.

On visiting a relative aged 8-9 I was horrified to find that the tuna was mixed with salad cream........I went running for my mummy at that horrific discovery.

Now if I fancy a tuna sarnie I use mayo.....and I really fancy a tuna sarnie but I can't eat bread, have no mayo and the cucumber is only good for the chickens.

So, how have your tastes changed over the years for the preparing of tinned tuna.......and as an aside does anyone still buy tinned salmon?

I've always 'mashed' tuna and salmon with malt vinegar for sandwiches, exactly as my mother and grandmother did.

Still enjoy it with thinly sliced cucumber. Are you in the West Midlands?
I don't like fish apart from tinned tuna and was certainly put off eating mackerel when I dissected them in biology at school, the intestinal canals were full of little white worms. Yecccch.
I remember it as a a child in the 50s/60s. It was very cheap and considered to be the poor man's salmon.
Tinned tuna and its take-off in this country? It occurred when the Japanese Ambassador's wife, Sue Shi, was homesick and had to find a way to get her raw fish fix and seaweed......

You couldn't get a more obvious pun than that!
Tuna or salmon with vinegar, a little finely chopped onion, black pepper and as a special treat a very little mayonnaise. Salad cream? Bin.
You're not supposed to eat those corylus.
That said, I feel sure they're good protein.
I have it with mayo but my grandparents always gave me it with vinegar and salt. Someone mentioned bowls of vinegar with sliced onion and cucumber in, they did that too, I really loved it the day after when it had a really long soak and make onion and cucumber sandwiches
I did that too, nothing went to waste :-)
