... salt on a meal without tasting it?

Just had a really good meal in a French Brasserie - on my own, so lots of time for 'people watching'.

Was amazed just how many people sprinkle salt all over their meal, before tasting any of it. I could understand a few grains on some chips, but not a general deluge.

The food was excellent (and very accurately seasoned) - so why are people doing this?

And do you?

Bonsoir mes amis

Nope and I use very little salt in my cooking, himself sometimes adds some after tasting but the kids are used to minimal salt.
I only put salt on chips, and maybe on/in boiled eggs.

No I don't, my OH does, he has lots of salt and pepper on his food.
I only add salt to chips.
Like daffy, only on fish and chips.
oops! forgot...and boiled eggs!
There was an American magnate, forget his name, who would invite candidates for senior positions to lunch. He would watch them, and any one who put salt or pepper on his meal without tasting it first was out the door.
I don't like a lot of salt but OH does, he puts salt on everything, heaps of it.

No, only added if needed.
I put black pepper on everything.
Never. I only put salt on fish and chips before tasting and that's just a silly habit.
Never have used salt on food or in cooking. Yuk !
I never cook with or add salt- except fish and chips. Lots of salt and vinegar there!
I dont even think of salt nowadays, but i must salt my boiled eggs, and add salt to mash potatoes.
Only on chips and potatoes, couldn't eat chips without salt!
I love pepper but had to give it as it makes me sneeze far too much!!!
Vinegar makes my tongue sore and cant have that any more.
Red sauce does the same thing --sore tongue.
Weird or what? lol
Same as Fusion5 I don't use it in cooking or on food, even chips. I buy the bags of crisps that have the little blue packet of salt in them, and throw it away.
Yes, on porridge.
