what is shortening, its for the fig recipe
shortening is hard cooking fat. The commonest kind found in the Uk is Trex but I would prefer to use butter.
Shortening does make a flakier type of pastry; however, I agree with Woofgang that butter or margarine is just about as good. Woofgang, is your middle name Amadeus?:)
OMG..sounds wonderful!!!
I love pumpkin soup...make it a lot ...and figs...scumptuous!!!

Ok, Kate what time do we have to be there? I'll bring the wine.
Can I come too..?
I made a batch of Thai spiced squash soup the other day, squash is so good in soup.

I'm contemplating ratatouille and something, jambalaya or minestrone soup - although as I have no bread in the house the soup is unlikely to get to the table this evening.
Squash is what I use for soup, very similar to pumpkin. It is lovely roasted too.
The best pumpkin soup I ever tasted was in Jamaica. Their pumpkin has a different taste to it and they use coconut milk and of course their unique blend of spices...Excellent.
Sounds gorgeous!!!
Thank you very much,stuey
The chef suggests that if you can't find Jamaican pumpkin, use squash instead. I say no: you HAVE to have Jamaican pumpkin to get the real taste.
Squash and red pepper curry, only 4 ingredients.......squash, red peeper, curry paste, tin coconut milk. Very quick, exceedingly tasty
Not sure what we ate having, it will be something with the leftover roast chicken.
A closed-face hot chicken sandwich with peas and gravy. Left-overs from a Thanksgiving dinner we had yesterday...Left-overs are MUCH better than the original meal.
Poached egg on one slice of toast for me. It's a fast day.
Have to agree with Stuey re leftovers; all of the joy and none of the effort.

I'm very torn between a burger and a steak sarnie for supper tomorrow. A big bowl of mind strain/minestrone is also pulling at my coat tails.
Got to be a steak sarnie, Eccles.
Stuey...is it Thanksgiving in Canada already??

As for that Jamaican squash...not too common round these parts.
