Hello everyone. I'm going to Uni in a month, and I've just found out that my kitchen facilities will be very limited (since College provides a sort of canteen service). However, I'd still like to be able to cook for myself on occasion. If anyone has any secret tips for making half-decent meals without needing an oven, hob, or grill, please let me know! (I'll have a microwave, a kettle and a toaster.)

Thanks in advance xx

hey, which uni you off to then? ?
there are plenty ready meals that u can heat up in the microwave. not all of them are unhealthy or expensive as people think! just take a wander around a supermarket :)

I would suggest getting a microwave cook-book with meals for one. I only had the same cooking facilities for some time, but managed to cook for three. Kedgeree is tasty, dauphinois potatoes, spaghetti bolognese etc, if you need any help, let me know

Cambridge uni (Emmanuel college). I'd rather not eat ready meals, I'm going to be on a veeeeeery tight budget & I could get ready meal equivalent food in hall. It's more to be able to cook for myself and eat what I want... I'm intrigued as to how you'd cook spaghetti bolognese in a microwave though.
scrambled egg on toast?
Get a George Foreman!  Or if you can stretch to it Lakeland sell a thing called a Remoska.  Either of those don't take up too much room and will considerably expand your cooking options.

aha. I've heard good things about Remoskas, what exactly are they?
Eek..!! Reminds me of my first flat, I never got more adventurous than 'stuff' on toast & pot noodle though...But if possible I'd advice that you invest in an electric steamer or slow cooker, also you can get bags now that you can use to cook things in your toaster..I think you buy them in woolworths or poundstretchers.
I'm currently doing a lot of cooking in my microwave since my oven broke (waiting patiently for new one) I've cooked all kinds of things full roast dinners, stews, bolognaise, curry etc, rice veg and potatoes are steamed in a micro Jacket potatoes really quick (although admittedly not as good as in an oven) as PollyFrance suggests, have a look at a microwave cookbook for ideas. I do cheese on toast by melting cheese & red onion in a bowl in the microwave, and then spreading on toast from the toaster, this also allows you to drain quite a bit of fat from the cheese. Good Luck
why not invest in a slow cooker
simply plug it in ........and away you go ......
put all your veg. & meat .etc in on the morning and .....
hey presto .....curry when you come home from the pub .
