Has anybody noticed that Bovril is now a different product?    A few months ago it seems to have been converted without any publicity from a beef extract to a yeast extract. (You have to look at the label very carefully to see whether it's marked "Original" or not.).  Does anybody prefer the new taste or should we afficionados campaign to the manufactuers to get the old formula back.   The new version now tastes more like Marmite than the old beefy flavour.

Obviously as a veggie I'm glad about it!  But I haven't tried it yet as it's a product I can't eat in my mind and it can be tricky to get past that psychological barrier.
got to be honest and say I din't notice the diff and I eat it on toast every day for breakfast
There was lots of publicity at the time. And Im a veggie and its great on toast(:)
Yes, horrified to discover the change at Christmas last year. I wrote to them and they said most people could not taste the difference, but we certainly can. We use Bovril Original a lot, even in cooking - I can't stand the yeast version - they should never have continued to call it Bovril - it's a contradiction as Bovril indicates Bovine which is Cow. It's a lie. I doubt they will ever go back to the original receipe now - what a shame. Can we buy the Original anywhere still?

I agree with Laura D. New veggie Bovril is nothing like the old beef based Bovril. I used to love the old Bovril on toast. Having tried everywhere to get old stock of the original I thought I would never find anything like it again.

However the other day..... 'Eureka'! I found a readily available (in the UK at least) product which is (in my opinion) incredibly similar in taste to the Original Bovril. It is 'Co-op Beefy' from my local Co-op. It is sub-titled 'For stocks and drinks'.

The beef content of Original Bovril was 40% beef stock, 2% Beef extract and 2% dehydrated beef. The 'Beefy' has 48% and 5% of the first two ingredients respectively and an undisclosed amount of beef powder which I presume is the same as dehydrated beef.

The bottle and general packaging is similar to that of Bovril's and the only real difference is that it is a little more liquid in consistency.

I hope others are as pleased to learn of this product as I was to find it .... and I hope they support it so that it remains on the shelves! I also plan to write to the Co-op to encourage them to keep it and not be put off by pressure from Veggies!

Hope this is helpful.
