Put one swede/turnip in microwave.
Don't peel, prick, prod, wash...just as you find it.
Cook on high for 15 mins initially, depending on size, give it a squeeze to check if it's cooked.....it makes a whistling noise when cooking hence the title :)
Once pinged...cut the top off and scoop out the perfectly cooked swede/turnip.
No more slashing yourself with knives peeling and chopping !

I have to say I did this with some trepidation but hey it worked a treat...i'm impressed ...clearly easily pleased ;) !

Scots celebrate Burns night the world over. We only recognise St.Andrews day because we feel duty bound...and that's the truth for the majority :)

I didn't know that KM. I love turnips but they are a health hazard to peel and chop up without losing several pints of blood.
I'll give it try next time, as you say, with some trepidation.
I once, MANY years ago, put chestnuts into my normal oven to roast them. OMG, after about 10 minutes there was the most awful explosion. It sounded like fireworks were going off inside the oven , Needless to say, they were all splattered everywhere. What a mess! Never again.
I'll try this at Hogmanay with my haggis, thanks.

PS probably wouldn't do the haggis the same way...
Great tip. I love swede :-)
Good tip, I like Ike & Tina Turnip.

janbee...i've tried and tested it for all you lovely ABers, it works a treat. Laughing at your chestnut experiment :)

venator...I do haggis in the microwave , boiling it up takes ages and ages !

ummm...I love it as well...was only put off at times by the hassle to even get it in the pot !

Svejk...groan :)
Sorry. Bachman Turnip Overdrive?
Question Author
Turnip the jam ;)
If you prick chestnuts with a fork they won't explode.
Question Author
So they can be microwaved then? That's excellent as I love them and don't have a fire to roast them over ! Cheers for that Blackadder :)
I never said microwave! Roast them in a conventional oven.
Question Author
Ooops...my mistake ! That could have been a catastrophe :)
Too right, kylesmum.
Yes...always prick chestnuts...they make a right proper mess if you don't :-)

I'm amazed I haven't caused myself serious injury chopping swede. I get the kids to do it now.....
Preparation method
Heat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.
Using a small, sharp knife, cut a cross into the skin of each nut. Put in a roasting tin and bake until the skins open and the insides are tender, about 30 minutes.
Serve in paper bags, if you like.
Question Author
ummmm...hopefully my handy tip will save you all from any injuries ;)

Blackadder...that is definitely on my to do list over the festive season, thank you !
(I don't really make the kids chop swede :-))
There's lots of pricks and nuts on this thread! LOL
Oh...naughty naughty...
Question Author
