words in stick of Rock

How do they put words into a stick of rock? also are there any restictions on what can be put into rock as the other day i saw one with a picture of the Blackpool tower in.

They start off by 'building' a short,  very wide chunk of rock (around 6" to 1ft across,  using black strips for the letters,  rather like lego.  If the block is kept warm,  it can then be stretched out until it is only an inch in diamter,  while the letters keep their shape.
