I wouldn't, the slow cooker is not half as hot as a frying pan.
I've not tried it, but I don't think it would be any good. Searing/browning meat is to keep the juices inside isn't it? They'll ooze out if it's a slow process. I always brown my meat and onions in a frying-pan first.
It won't BROWN it at all - a slow-cooker is nowhere near hot enough.

OK, thanks all back to the frying pan.
I brown/burn off fat in dry sauce pan & soak up fat on bread (dropped into pan & discarded). Now add other ingredients, bring to boil & move to SC to simmer & blend.

Avoid greasy cholestrol spog.
tambo: garden birds would LOVE that bread - when cold!
My dogs get it ;)
The blackbirds would love it.

I brown mine in my slow cooker, but only because mine is designed to be used on the hob and oven as well. It really depends on if yours can go on a hob.
mine has the feature to brown on the hob in the inner cooking container so it's great, but with normal ones it wouldn't work, not enough heat to seal the meat!.....
