When Does A Stew Become A Casserole?

Is a stew working class and a casserole middle class?

I always refer to stews when cooked on the hob and casseroles when done in the oven. No idea if I am right or not

If I make a beef stew, I use stewing steak.

Casserole is merely the French word for the pot in which you make stew. No difference, except the former sounds posher.
