After reading the thread on American Pancakes, I am going to have a go at making them this morning. But exactly what is "Buttermilk" and what can I use if I can't find some in the Co-op ?

Mikey, I don't know but I do know that pancake day was tuesday!
I think sourmilk is similar. You can get it in large Tescos, I believe.
ooo good luck getting it from Co-op!
Full cream milk?
Sour milk. Put lemon juice or vinegar in normal milk.

Or...if you turn cream into butter the liquid left behind is the same as buttermilk.

You can get it at a Polish shop if there is one in your area.
I would have thought it was easy to get hold of in Ireland.

When I make soda bread I use vinegar.
Buttermilk is what is left after you have made butter
That's what I said.

Thanks everybody !
Sorry, Mikey, I had it in my head that Sandy posted this. Ignore the 'Ireland' comment.

No probs Ummmm. At least my usual Trolls aren't around this morning, as there are a couple that wait for me to post, on just about anything, and then start their nonsense !
I would post some nonsense but I am not yet awake.

How is Willie doing??

Curled up in his bed, sleeping soundly wolfie !
I get buttermilk in our local Tesco, it's in a tub similar to cream.

Thanks rocky...I may go out later and find some, although the lemon juice and milk method looks very easy.
American buttermilk is NOT the residue from making butter. It is a cultured milk...easily imitated at home by adding a squeeze of lemon juice or splash of vinegar to ordinary milk and letting it rest for a few minutes. This was suggested in old American cake recipes used by both my mum and myself.
It's also probably a cheaper to just doctor ordinary milk.
They sell it in our Asda
