After reading the thread on American Pancakes, I am going to have a go at making them this morning. But exactly what is "Buttermilk" and what can I use if I can't find some in the Co-op ?
No probs Ummmm. At least my usual Trolls aren't around this morning, as there are a couple that wait for me to post, on just about anything, and then start their nonsense !
American buttermilk is NOT the residue from making butter. It is a cultured milk...easily imitated at home by adding a squeeze of lemon juice or splash of vinegar to ordinary milk and letting it rest for a few minutes. This was suggested in old American cake recipes used by both my mum and myself.
